MSAD #51 District Newsletter - September 22, 2023

From the Superintendent

On September 18, the Board adopted the district's 2023-24 Strategic Priorities, which are linked to the MSAD #51 Strategic Plan's four priority buckets: Wellness, Early Childhood Education, College & Career Readiness, and 21st Century Learning. This is the first in a four-part series that will help unpack these priorities with more detail.

As a district that believes in well-rounded students and staff members, efforts to promote wellness as a foundation for teaching and learning are important components in meeting our strategic goals. We recognize that Wellness is a critical part of supporting learning and teaching.

2023-24 Wellness Priorities:
  • Revising and communicating each school's homework guidelines with age-appropriate expectations, in line with district policy;
  • Reviewing and refining nutrition offerings in our school cafeterias;
  • Implementing the district's newly upgraded emergency operations plan;
  • Monitoring and supporting Year 2 of the ALICE safety approach;
  • Partnering with the Sandy Hook Promise around an anonymous reporting system; and
  • Supporting our staff through enhanced recruitment and retention efforts.
2022-23 Wellness Priorities:
  • Introduced ALICE safety approach and training for all staff and students;
  • Developed new emergency operations plan;
  • Continued efforts to harden facilities for safety based on recommendations of Homeland Security; and
  • Supported each student's belonging and connection to their school through school-based activities and programs.

Regards,
Jeff Porter

MEA Parent Letter

Maine Law requires public schools to have all students in grades three through eight, and second year of high school, participate in the Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) for Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy testing.  MSAD #51 also includes students in their first year of high school in this testing.  The Maine State Science Assessment will be given in grades 5, 8, and 3rd year of high school.  Maine uses this data for accountability purposes and it is one of the primary tools used by the state to determine the effectiveness of a school and its programs.
