Greely Middle School 6-8 Update - April 27, 2022
GMS 6-8 fixtures were tested.  After mitigation measures were taken, the water fixtures at Greely Middle School 6-8 were re-tested.  The results can be viewed in this Laboratory Report.

Lead Water Testing at MSAD #51

• With the passage of LD 153 (An Act to Strengthen Testing for Lead in School Drinking Water), the Maine Legislature has mandated that all schools in Maine test their drinking water for the presence of lead. The Drinking Water Program has been charged with coordinating the effort, which went into effect October 1, 2021, and must be completed by May 2022.
• Test results for lead in school drinking water are measured in parts-per-billion (ppb). Water fixtures with results over 4ppb are recommended for mitigation/remediation.
• We surpassed the intended law and tested all water fixtures, including fixtures in non-drinking and non-cooking areas.
• So far, we have sampled all fixtures in two buildings: 174 tested at GHS and 87 tested at MIW. GMS is scheduled to be sampled in March. 
• We are ensuring all drinking fixtures receive corrective measures as necessary. 
• There was one drinking fountain that came back high at the GHS Library. This is an older unit that has been shut down and it is slated to be replaced over February vacation with the new unit which was previously ordered and is on-site.
• The rest of the fixtures that have come back on the high side are in several areas that are not drinking water such as some science sinks, some bathrooms, art rooms, and locker room sinks.
• The new GCA came back elevated in the Greenroom and dressing rooms we suspect due to being dormant for so long during COVID.
• At MIW, drinking fountains and bubblers appear fine. Only some classroom sinks, art room sinks, and a couple of hand washing sinks in the kitchen were elevated.
• It is important to stress that our buildings were idle for 3 months back in March-June 2020 and there are likely effects from this on lead buildup in pipes.
• We will be sending out a notification through our newsletter this week as well as posting on our website the results of GHS and MIW. Once the GMS samples are collected and tested in March, we will send those results out at that time.

Clarification/Addendum - 2.21.22MIW - has faucets and bubblers embedded in the sink units. We only had two units at MIW that tested at an elevated level, which are being remediated, but otherwise, the units are fine to use. Water can be used for drinking/cooking from either the faucets or fountains that are on the units.
GHS - only use water coolers, water bottle stations, and sinks that are not marked with signage until we re-test and determine if remediation is needed for sinks that came back elevated (and we have since marked with signage). 
GMS - has not been tested and is the newest facility with the newest water fixtures. We will complete testing in March. Until then, we have no restrictions on the use of water from any fixtures at this time. My message last week was premature regarding GMS. If you feel more comfortable doing so, then you can use designated fountains and water bottling stations in lieu of sinks faucets until we have testing completed.
